architectsAlliance’s second collaboration with York has advanced the University’s green design agenda, and set a new precedent as the first sustainably built student housing project in Ontario.
The building form is a response to its long, narrow site, sandwiched between existing buildings and looking south onto a major campus roadway: the L-shaped podium extends a full 91 meters along Pond Road. Its patterned glass and concrete box appears to hover above a transparent ground floor that reveals a series of new courtyards to the north. A nine-storey residential tower at the east end of the site completes the U-shaped plan.
The Pond Residence uses the same energy as conventional residences half its size, while adding urban vitality and contemplative green spaces to a suburban campus.
