Following an international design competition, aA was commissioned to design the residential component of a mixed-use development in Cambridge, MA near MIT.
The residences consist of two buildings. A 12-storey tower marks the corner of the precinct’s main boulevard. At a right angle to the tower, a 10-storey bar building extends across the site.
Throughout Boston, streets of rowhouses overlook long-established public greens. The North Point bar building reinterprets this traditional urban form: at grade, two-storey duplex units establish a strong street wall and let out onto a parkette to the south, or face a new public park to the north.
The North Point residential buildings address a complex brief: up close, they provide an intimate residential experience for pedestrians. At a distance, their patterned skins, combining colour and transparency, mark and give identity to this new community. North Point will be completed in the Summer of 2006.
