The Don Valley Brick Works was one of Canada’s pre-eminent brickyards from 1889 to 1989. By transforming this industrial heritage site into an educational space and ‘laboratory’ for urban sustainability, aA and Evergreen are offering an object lesson on adaptive reuse to policy makers throughout Canada and the U.S.
The Master Plan explores the relationships between nature, culture and community through sustainable architectural plans, nature conservancy and interpretive strategies. A site access and circulation plan re-connects the Brick Works with its ravine setting and with surrounding residential areas. A heritage impact statement identifies landmark and heritage features for preservation, while the landscape plan extends ecological habitats from the Valley through Brick Works Park and onto the Industrial Pad. A carefully considered business plan will ensure that Evergreen at the Brick Works is as economically sustainable as it is ‘green.’
In 2006, the Master Plan received the Canadian Urban Institute’s “Brownie” Award for best adaptive use of a heritage brownfields site.
