The Harbourfront Centre is one of the Toronto’s major cultural and recreational venues. However, after 32 years its public spaces needed renewal. To operate year-round, the Centre needed better connections between existing buildings and more venues that could be used in winter.
aA developed a comprehensive urban design plan for the waterfront between Harbourfront Centre and the Terminal Warehouse, a prototype for renewing the entire central waterfront promenade. The designers pursued a three-pronged strategy: re-shaping the Water’s Edge to increase access and amenity; reshaping buildings, landscapes and open spaces; and promoting a dynamic mixture of public uses, attractions and activities.
Phase 1 construction on York Quay was completed between 2004 and 2005. It included new landscaped waterfront promenades, custom-designed lights, benches, and bollards, new finger piers and floating boardwalks.
